Emergency crews were focusing on a conveyor belt, with a large blanket draped over a section.

A WorkSafe spokeswoman said the watchdog was investigating the incident.

“[The man] was reported to have been working with a conveyor belt when he was caught in the
belt,” she said.

“WorkSafe investigators examine the circumstances of incidents with a view to ensuring
compliance and preventing future incidents of a similar nature.”

In a statement, WA Salt said the death occurred in its packaging plant.

“All work on site has ceased to allow WorkSafe to carry out its investigation,” it read.

“This is a devastating day for everyone at WA Salt, and our thoughts are with the deceased’s friends, family and colleagues at this extremely difficult time.

“Employee safety and wellbeing is our highest priority, and counselling has been made available for all employees.”

The death is the second in North Coogee to be investigated by WorkSafe in the past year after Nathaniel Good, 19, died at a construction site in November.

WA Salt Supply is the state’s largest naturally harvested solar lake salt manufacturer and services domestic and international markets.
